Nitrogen Cycling

Precise management of nitrogen inputs is an important component of PSA. Previous research suggests that cover crops can increase and decrease nitrogen fertilizer needs. However, more research is needed in order to recommend nitrogen fertilizer rate adjustments based on cover crop species, biomass production, and environmental conditions.

The Common Experiment 1- Nitrogen Cycling team is conducting a field-based experiment to study nitrogen from cover crops. This team operates in 15 different sites across the northern, middle, and southern United States.

Results from this data will be used to provide data to support farmer decision-making for site-specific cover crop and nitrogen management.
